Digipak Analysis - XX Coexist

Created with flickr slideshow.

The XX - Coexist

Conventions It DOES follow:
Artist’s name
Booklet
Album name
Images (Abstract, not of artist)
Producer's information
Track listing
Record Label
Image on CD
4X Panels
Simple Colour Scheme
Abstract Images

Conventions it does not follow:
Track information (song writers and duration, usually located on the back)
Images of artists
Due to them being an indie/pop band it is conventional of them to not have images of themselves, due to wanting to be unique.

Colour and Effects:
These simple colours on the digipak coincides with the name of the album “Coexist" for example for example ‘Peaceful coexistence’, a theory developed and applied by the Soviet Union at various points during the Cold War . However once you really start to look at the black you realise that it is not black but it is the colours you get in an oil spill, this bringing forward multiple colours in a metals pattern. This again I believe resembles human society as there is more than two types of things that coexist in the real world so the multiple colours in the oil spill resembles this. Further more on the black against the white, this also makes me think of Propp’s theory of binary opposites unable to exist without one another, for example yin and yang, which represents the harmony of two things coexisting, and more such as light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, fire and water, life and death, and so on.

Wording and Font:
The theme of the album is no doubt simplicity, which is further portrayed in the typeface used. The text is all in capital letters making it bold and clear to read against the contrasting white background.  There is also minimal wording on the digipak itself this might be due to underlying theme that seems to simple. Overall it’s striking clear linear structure catches the eye of the primary audience as well as the secondary audience as it stands out of the ordinary digipaks you see on the shelves of supermarkets mostly being very colourful.

Choice of images:
On this digipak the only images are abstract, none of which being of the artist/band. I believe this is because the artist wants to be unique.

Design and layout:
The design and layout is also very minimalist and simple but yet it says a lot for the album and the artists. This makes the digipak interesting and engaging. The design of the digipak is cleaver in the simple act of removing the booklet leaves the X in the front cover empty. This is a simple thing yet it makes the digipak that much effective. Also in order to reduce the information seen at face value they incorporated all the copyright information, producers etc behind the CD socket.

I believe that the Digipak is a really effective one as it says a lot through it simplicity. I shall definitely bare this in mind whilst constructing my digipak.
